International Deathmatch and Hardcore Wrestling Update for January 16th, 2019GCW’s 400 Degreez, Kasai and Masaoka out with knee injuries, Takahashi vs. Kodaka and other upcoming BJW notes, Onita prepping for surgery and more—GCW has set the wrestling world on fire with legendary dream matches, cross country tours, international talent, resurrecting PCO but they had to remind us they’re also the most ludicrous deathmatch company in the world. On January 12th GCW ran “400 Degreez” in Chicago. It was their first time back since the NGI 3 in August and sadly the Gali Arena is long gone. Instead they ran in the Summit Park District Building which looked like a gymnasium.
It was a big change of pace from the usual dimly lit bars and arenas they’ve been running. I personally liked the Asbury Park venue for aesthetics but a few people told me they liked this place better because of the better lighting and lines of sight. The show was promoted as a “deathmatch” show from top to bottom in a callback to the Howell, NJ shows where there were very few stipulations announced but every match was designed for carnage. The night before GCW ran a joint show with Freelance Underground (a local Chicago promotion) the night before on January 11th. Shlak was injured at the show so he could not have his match against John Wayne Murdoch which was a real bummer. The non-deathmatch stuff was pretty par for the course. MJF defeated Jimmy Lloyd in a “classic” style of a match. A lot of heel heat from MJF, a table was set up but not used, strangely enough there was a countout tease which was kind of funny given the rest of the show, Lloyd hit a cannonball on the outside but MJF won in the end. Despite MJF winning Lloyd sent him through a table and stood tall at the end.Going into the show both MJF and Joey Janela appeared at the AEW launch rally in Jacksonville, FL and they appear to have signed contracts.
The contracts are said to allow wrestlers freedom to work indy shows and Cody Rhodes specifically said Joey can still run his Spring Break shows. I still assume MJF wants to be booked in a higher manner than most.DJZ defeated Jungle Boy in a smooth match. Very good stuff. The first deathmatch saw Matt Tremont defeat Reed Bentley.
It was a big hoss match with some shoot headbutts, lighttubes, some gusset plate arm spots (I really think gusset plates need a new something, its all these arm spots over and over) and Tremont won with a DVD through a door in the corner. After the match the crowd chanted “both these guys”. The two showed respect before Reed turned on him and John Wayne Murdoch joined in to beat Tremont down before Lloyd made the save. All the GCW fans I speak to have the same little nitpick in that they want to see more storylines to carry between shows so there ya go.Dave Prazak was on commentary and joined by different wrestlers through the show including Disfunction, Danny Havoc and Joey Janela. I can’t state enough how awesome Dave Prazak is at everything. I wish GCW could use him for every show because he brings such energy, doesn’t bog down commentary with unnecessary comedy skits, he isn’t hammered, he knows the wrestlers, their moves, their backgrounds, I love when Prazak is on a show.G-Raver defeated Orin Veidt in Veidt’s debut match. The match was designed to get Veidt over.
Veidt has been doing deathmatches for ICW out of Milwaukee for most of 2018 and made his debut in H20 recently. Him being “called up” to GCW was a big moment for every one as it gives a lot of fresh new matches for every one on the roster. The story of the match was Veidt couldn’t counter a lot of Raver’s offense but he could stand up to it. He no sold a lot of stuff but in the end lost to double knees. The amount of insane spots was off the charts: A swinging DDT through a lighttube door, a syringe through the cheek, a dive to the outside through lighttubes into the guard rail, an UGLY suplex onto upside down chairs, an assault driver into lighttubes in the corner and a lot more. Orin was SLICED to the gills.
He still has that “virgin” skin without much scarring that just shreds open so easily and his one shoulder and arm was pouring blood. The crowd was incredibly into Orin and with him starting on the bottom it lets guys like Erik Ryan and Lloyd move up a bit.
If he has the dedication to it he could be a huge star in the deathmatches. They aired a replay of the Orange Cassidy vs. Kikutaru match for intermission before one of the 7 way scrambles with all the likely suspects.
The big standouts were KTB and Shane Mercer. I have never been a big fan of KTB before, he’s a big guy I guess and does basic power move matches but nothing has ever clicked with me until this match. Much of the match was Mercer and KTB throwing the little guys around like Brock Lesnar. They ragdolled Aero Boy, Deppen, Bandolero and others. Absolutely awesome and these guys need to be a tag team.
Mercery pinned KTB in the end.Going into the show the main draw was the return of Daisuke Masaoka. Masaoka previously competed at the NGI 2 in 2017 and I know he rubbed every one in GCW the right way. Masaoka wears a GCW shirt at a lot of Freedoms events, he teams with Los Mazios and Violento Jack (with whom he is Freedoms tag champs with) and I know he was very excited to head back to the US. GCW gives these guys an avenue to compete in the US that no other company can offer. He was taking on Alex Colon who appears to be the go to guy to pair the international talent with. I know Takeda loved his match with Colon and after this match Masaoka spoke highly of Colon as well so he is doing all the right things.Yet again the spots were insane. They used a lot of log cabins, a skewer board, lighttube bats, etc. The match was very smooth and Masaoka sells “pain” great.
They did a superplex into a brainbuster spot which set the crowd on fire and a lot of running knees until Masaoka hit a sliced bread on the outside off the ring post through a lighttube door.Unfortunately the match stopped right there. Masaoka talked with the ref for a while and tossed some lighttubes in the ring. He broke several lighttubes over Colon, including a fan made version of the lighttube “fan” that Yoshihisa Uto made and coined before pinning Colon with a running knee.As soon as the match ended the ref threw up the “X” and they started to tend to Masaoka.Masaoka looked in absolute pain. He still stood up and embraced/raised the hand of Colon twice as the entire locker room poured out. It is weird when these things happen and you wind up with all these guys caring for each other in a very public setting. Shane Mercer and others carried Masaoka to the back and he looked on the verge of tears.
The crowd was going wild for him and showing him all the respect they could in a scene that reminded me of Spiderman on the Subway.Tony Deppen stayed with Masaoka in Chicago the entire time until his flight out, I’m sure Masaoka had some tourist stuff planned that got dashed. More on the injury below. It is hard to keep the Japanese talent for extended periods of time but after this scene it is hard not to want to run with Masaoka when he is better.Darin Corbin came out for a promo while they cleaned up the ring. No clue who he is. The mic wasn’t recorded well. Whatever.Nate Webb defeated Markus Crane in a fuckery boards match to win the ICW Alternative Title. This was Nate Webb’s first deathmatch in over a decade and Webb specifically asked for it.
The match had pop can boards, cinderblocks, lighttube doors and more. Prazak has been calling Webb matches for a long time so he just added a lot tot his in the way JR adds to a Steve Austin match. The match wasn’t the best thing ever and I have to say Markus Crane has looked pretty “off” the past few shows. In the car crash tag matches it wasn’t such a big deal but in this one on one match it showed. I’ll just say he’s not the Sandman. There were a few big spots including a semi-botched moonsault with the popcan board that popped the crowd and a dragon suplex through a bunch of lighttubes before Webb won with a soylent green through a lighttube door on the outside. There was a moment of confusion as the pin was counted on the outside but the ref tried to restart the match in the ring but, to put it bluntly, Webb was done. I really don’t know if Webb was too happy about taking on this deathmatch as he looked spent and ready to get out of there by the end.The main event was next and I was so exhausted by this point. The one criticism of these deathmatch shows has always been that they’re just too much and they can peel back a little bit.
At this point we had seen 4 matches with lighttubes and glass everywhere and we had one more to go AND one of the deathmatches was canceled!Nick Gage defeated Erik Ryan to retain the GCW title. Gage came out to the usual fan fare with Jeff Skelton and crew backing him up having strokes screaming “NICK FUCKIN GAGE!” The match started a little slower than I thought it would, Gage really looked like his knee was bothering him, with hard exchanges and reversals. They brought out the glass and started doing spears through tables and lighttube shots.
Gage his a top rope outsides edge through a glass pane and a piledriver off the top rope through another pane of glass before getting the pin with his rolling piledrivers and sending the crowd home happy. The show was off the charts and if you like deathmatches this was definitely for you. The match of the night was probably G-Raver vs. Colon was right up there with it but it had to end a little early before the final sprints.GCW’s upcoming schedule keeps adding names.First we have “They Said It Couldn’t Be Done” featuring the return of Jun Kasai to the US on February 16th in Atlantic City. No word on his opponent but hopefully it’ll be announced early next month.
GCW added several discounted hotel rooms at a sponsored venue that all sold out almost immediately. Tickets are tracking higher than usual for this so if you want a good seat I’d jump on that. The only other match for the show announced so far is KTB vs.
Tracy Williams and also Chris Dickinson will be on the show. They have added Frank Mir in his professional wrestling debut to the Bloodsport show on April 4th. They are really pushing that he defeated Brock Lesnar in a shoot fight.Results.DTU 1/1/2019Pachuca, Hidalgo, MexikoFive Way MatchRocco Vann Jr.
Watching the Japanese deathmatch scene has never been easier but it isn’t perfect. Obviously the Real Hero Archive has most every show you could ever imagine up there including most all Freedoms shows and a ton of classic hardcore puroresu. The Mutton and the Ham Youtube Channel for a lot of classic FMW, IWA, BJW and also current BJW, Freedoms and odd show spots The Official BJW Youtube Channel goes through moods of uploading a LOT of content. During the 2017 Ikkitousen they were uploading 2 or 3 tournament matches a day.You can find a lot more Youtube channels by searching for the Japanese name of any of your favorite wrestlers (such as this match featuring Takeda and Kasai from an indy), a lot of handicam/phone footage or those notorious DVD only shows but there is little consistency.BJW has a subscription streaming service called BJW Core and is 888 yen a month (about $8 USD) located at Midsouth is available onBahu sells a TON of classic, hard to find hardcore puro as well as current Freedoms DVD’s. You can contact him at shows are harder to get. The smaller shows, despite having crazy matches on the regular, are only filmed half the time and are only sold as DVD exclusives at shows (that I would buy if I had owned a DVD player in the past 6 years) so they rarely make it to Youtube or Real Hero. The larger shows from Korakuen are broadcast on Samurai TV on a 2-3 week delay without commentary and with muted music entrances and only 1 camera shots but for whatever reason these only appear sporadically on the normal avenues so good luck. You can direct any questions, comments or thoughts to me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/intlwrestling.
